Dr. Raphael L. Greenfield, D.D.S. M.Sc.D.



Dr. Raphael L. Greenfield D.D.S., M.Sc.D.Dr. Greenfield graduated with honors from Howard University College of Dentistry in 1971.  After receiving his Master of Science in Orthodontics from Boston University in 1973, he was appointed Clinical Instructor until 1976.  Dr. Greenfield became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics in 1984 and was invited to exhibit his board cases at the American Association of Orthodontics annual session.

Presentations and Publications

Dr. Greenfield has lectured extensively, both nationally and internationally on his 98.5% nonextraction treatment philosophy entitled; “Coordinated Arch Development®.”  He was invited to present this philosophy at the 1996, 2003, 2004 and 2005 scientific sessions of the American Association of Orthodontics.

Dr. Greenfield was also asked to present his nonextraction approach at the 1992 and 2002 College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics annual sessions, the 1993 Southern Association of Orthodontists’ annual session, the 1998 Northeastern Society of Orthodontists’ annual meeting, the 1999 American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry annual session, the 2001 Japanese Orthodontic Society Annual session, the Israel Orthodontic Society annual session and the Dubai Orthodontic Society annual session.

His article in the August 1993 Journal of Clinical Orthodontics on “Simultaneous Torquing and Intrusion” aroused great interest in his methods of intruding, torquing and retracting maxillary incisors.  March 1995, and September 2005 articles in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics described his unique “Fixed Piston Appliance” to distalize molars and develop space for tooth alignment and profile reduction in noncompliant patients.  In February 2011, the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics published his article, “Clinical Application of a modified lip bumper,” to illustrate the proper application of this extremely versatile appliance for arch development.

In 1999, Dr. Greenfield authored the first and only textbook on nonextraction treatment entitled, “Nonextraction Orthodontics; the History, Philosophy and Clinical Application.” The textbook has now been published in three different languages.   An 1100 page second edition entitled, Non Ex Factors, 98.5% Nonextraction Therapy using Coordinated Arch Development®,” was published in 2010.   It contains more than 7,000 photographs illustrating Dr. Greenfield’s nonextraction philosophy and technique.

Professional Memberships

In addition to serving as a referee for the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Dr. Greenfield is a member of the American Association of Orthodontics and the Southern Association of Orthodontics.

Practitioner and Inventor

Dr. Greenfield is the originator of five scientific patents and has successfully treated more than 10,000 nonextraction patients.   His Coordinated Arch Development® technique and philosophy creates radiant smiles, ideal facial and dental esthetics, optimum function and long term orthodontic stability.
